Affordable housing proposal
Christian Gerardo Medina & Elise Gaare Ytterstad
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico 2018
We were asked to propose a new design for affordable housing in San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, Mexico by the Casita Linda Foundation.
The idea is that the prototype house should not exceed 60 m2 nor the cost of 10 000 dollars and should be easy to construct.

DESIGN

The main design idea of the project is to create a good common space
where the entire family can spend time together. In the design process we have tried to make a hierarchy of spaces, organizing them around a generous social space with a high ceiling and a lot of air and contact with the outdoors. The bedrooms are of a smaller character in size and height, though not compromized in design. They are added in a thoughtful way, creating a transition between the personal and social aspect of living. This is done with a small staircase of three steps when entering the bedrooms and a fixed furniture in plywood separating the spaces as a buffer. It serves both sides; in the bedroom as a closet and in the living room as a niche for sitting and as the kitchen.

In this way we can make the 60 m2 that are asked for utilized to their fullest, giving families a social home.
